Marula & History

The marula (Sclerocarya birrea) is a tree known to us as the Elephant Tree. It is found in 29 countries in Africa and is characterized by its enormous production of marula fruit. An adult tree can produce no less than 500 kg of fruit a year.

It is to be found in sub-Saharan countries and can withstand droughts very well. Even in dry periods the tree does grow. The fruits are filled up with pulp and seeds. Both the pulp and the seeds can be used for cosmetic purposes.

Marula & South Africa

The marula tree is present in large numbers in South Africa. When the fruits are ripe, they fall like a green fruit from the tree and will fully ripen within 5 days. Farmers often place a fence around the trees, so that they can harvest the fruit at first; the animals are also a great lover of the fruits. The fruits do taste sweet-sour.

This indigenous tree grows on the savannah in low-rainfall areas and can also be found in nature parks such as the Kruger National Park.

The marula plays an important role in the traditions of many African nations and has been used for centuries because of its fantastic properties, to heal damaged skin tissue, and to moisturize and protect the skin from the sun. Especially among the Zulu population; a Bantu nation, mainly living in North Natal in South Africa.
